It always used to irk me,
if when I held a door,
I got no smile or thanks from
the one I held it for.
To that ungrateful person
I then would turn and say,
"You're welcome, sir (or madam)"
in my most pleasant way.
But now I ask myself where
my altruism ranks,
If when I act politely,
I do it just for thanks.
